Conclusion

For Paul, true wisdom is found in the cross, the antithesis of status-conscious worldly wisdom. True wisdom can be understood only from the vantage point of the age to come, when truth will be impossible to evade (cf. 2 Cor. 3:13–15; 4:5). God’s Spirit reveals this perspective on reality to believers, qualifying them to understand dimensions of the divine perspective. God’s Spirit may communicate this to believers in various ways.

By contrast, Paul argues, the world that honors the very expressions of power that crucified Christ lacks the competence for spiritual and moral evaluation. Unfortunately, the Corinthian Christians had imbibed more of the world’s spirit than of Christ’s and were therefore evaluating matters wrongly. The mind of Christ was available to them, but it was for mature believers, who walk in Christ’s love, not for childish believers, who harshly judge one another and divide from one another in envy and strife. An increasingly fuller understanding of the character of Christ crucified could increasingly transform their character, conforming them to Christ’s glorious image.
